I have the same problem, and in fact my original USB port now appears to be faulty with poor connections from time to time not recognizing my external HD. Everything on the system side checks out, so I think something burned up on the board and its a goner. But still atleast i now know its an issue with the unit and none of my doing…. And remember to touch some metal table-leg, office chair etc before plugging in the ipod again.
